The Banyule City Council, a local government council presiding over the city of Banyule in Melbourne, Australia, designed a planning guide as the go-to reference for companies and independent parties who plan to host events within their municipality while following national COVID-19 protocols. The project required a design for a multi-page brochure, an event checklist, and a risk management plan.
The challenge for this design was to find a balance between creativity and professionalism, as the documents would be official local government materials. The copy was text-heavy, hence ensuring that the layout would be able to integrate relevant images and elements and provide support to the text. Maximizing the provided space without being too overwhelming was another goal that needed to be achieved for this project.
There are a lot of indoor and outdoor activities that can be done in the city of Banyule, and that was the initial idea behind the cover page: a set of fun illustrations that showcase the variety of recreational activities to those familiar and unfamiliar with the city. It’s a great way to introduce the city and make the audience a bit more curious about what the city can offer to visitors and guests.
Events can vary from company-wide to family-centered activities, hence the use of bright colors. Illustrations that were selected followed the fun and engaging theme of the images provided by the client, to show consistency of a happy and positive atmosphere of their city. The designs veer away from typical forms that are in black and white, which connotes a feel of an easy and uncomplicated way of processing requirements.
